Maiami

What’s the restaurant in a nutshell?

Maiami, a brasserie and artist studio flourishing in the heart of Chania, offers a unique interplay of art and cuisine. Situated within a characterful art-deco edifice, tucked away from the bustling tourist track, the establishment reveals the visionary world of artist and winemaker Alexandra Manousakis. Rooted in Cretan soil, Maiami extends a warm invitation to journey through Manousakis’s vivid narrative that combines her passion for art, wine, and local lore. Every corner of the brasserie resonates with Manousakis’s artistic flair. Once a 1950s family restaurant also named Maiami, an affectionate nod to the Greek spelling of Miami, the renovated space honours its predecessor, preserving key features like the characteristic pink doors and windows and forming a delightful fusion of past and present.

What are the signature dishes?

A tour de force of home-style cooking, Maiami’s menu is an ode to Manousakis’s cosmopolitan upbringing, embodying an intriguing mélange of Persian, Greek, Italian and Jamaican influences. The rich culinary tableau includes gems like Mama Sharma’s Shrimp, an ambrosial Jamaican creation featuring a luscious turmeric and mustard seed sauce, a nod to a cherished childhood reminiscence. The refreshing watermelon salad offers a sublime pairing of summer’s favourite fruit with feta cheese and a whisper of spearmint. The pan-seared sea bass accompanied by fennel and charred carrots is a brunch must-have, while the comforting Indian daal with organic black lentils is a testament to the soulful cooking philosophy of Maiami. The thread that binds the diverse menu together is a potent sense of nostalgia and sentimentality, infusing each dish with heart and personality.

Drinks, anyone?

The drinking experience at Maiami reflects Manousakis’s winemaking craft, featuring Nostos Wines from the Manousakis Winery. Each label in the series tells a tale, two of which are adorned by Manousakis’s own drawings. As a homage to the land, a majority of the ingredients sourced for Maiami’s kitchen hail from Manousakis’s gardens, grown from locally-salvaged heirloom seeds, thanks to partner Stelios Kalyvianakis. The ethos of care is embodied in every glass of wine and every plate served, all underlining Manousakis’s vision: to create a dynamic, yet relaxed space that harmonises love for art, food, wine and good company.

What’s the island like?

Steeped in history and bathed in Mediterranean sunlight, Crete, Greece’s largest island, serves as a captivating blend of vibrant landscapes and cultural charm. Traverse the bustling streets of Heraklion, home to a treasure trove of Minoan art, or relish the coastal beauty of Chania with its stunning Venetian Harbour. History buffs can unravel ancient tales at the Palace of Knossos and the city of Phaistos, while nature enthusiasts can marvel at the impressive Samaria Gorge and the unique pink sands of Elafonisi Beach. A healthy, delectable Cretan diet awaits food lovers, and the locals’ legendary hospitality, philoxenia, warms the heart of every traveller.
