A sparkling addition to the glittering array of Como’s premium properties, Passalacqua is a gem that blends history, charm and modernity in equal measures. This striking palazzo, constructed in 1787 by Count Andrea Lucini Passalacqua, has been meticulously transformed into a 24-room hotel that has successfully retained its essence of a private, refined home. Indeed, Passalacqua’s allure goes beyond its breath-taking location on the shores of Lake Como. Its enchanting history includes a colourful array of past visitors including Napoleon, Churchill, the composer Bellini and even extends to a connection with Rosemary Clooney’s nephew, a resident of a nearby village. What truly sets this place apart is the De Santis family’s vision for this palazzo – transforming it into a captivating blend of luxury and history, without losing the original homely appeal.
The experience of staying at Passalacqua is nothing short of remarkable. With 12 rooms and suites within the main villa, each one showcases a distinct charm and character. Notably, the enormous Suite Bellini, named after the renowned composer who was a frequent guest and created two of his greatest works here, offers an impressive 250 square metres of opulence. This suite houses the Salla Della Musica with ornate frescoed ceilings and a grand piano, situated where Bellini’s reportedly once was. Beyond the main villa, the property extends to a tastefully repurposed stable block offering a further eight rooms and a spa area. Closer to the water, Casa al Lago encompasses a further four rooms that can be reserved in its entirety.
