Athens, Greece

Phaon

What’s the store in a nutshell?

Phāon, located in the heart of Athens, is a captivating olfactory concept store that brings together a curated selection of niche fragrances, flower arrangements and art. Founded by art director Alexandros Kalogiros and set designer Dimitra Louana Marlanti, Phāon was born out of their shared love for olfactory art and a desire to offer a unique shopping experience. The store is named after Phaon, a figure from Greek mythology who was transformed by the goddess Aphrodite, symbolising the transformative power of love and beauty – a theme echoed throughout the store. Phāon aims to transcend the traditional boundaries of a perfume shop, inviting customers into a world where the senses are harmoniously engaged.

What is the aesthetic of the brand?

The aesthetic of Phāon is a sophisticated blend of modernity and tradition, designed by Athens-based artist and interior designer Stamos Michael. The store is conceived as a container where products take centre stage, much like the accords in a fragrance. It features a striking contrast of industrial and natural materials, with modular displays made of laser-cut stainless steel and frosted acrylic surfaces that exude sleek industrial vibes. These are elegantly balanced by a handcrafted counter coated in mocha-hued limewash and a white marble sink, paying homage to Mediterranean artisanal culture. A natural jute carpet ties the elements together, while curtains lining the storefront create an air of mystery, seamlessly blending public and private spaces.

What are the signature pieces?

Phāon’s signature pieces are as eclectic and thoughtful as the store’s design. The selection of perfumes includes unique brands such as Astier de Villatte, Atelier Materi, Ormaie Paris, Perfumer H (do try Ink, our favourite from the brand) and Santa Maria Novella. These fragrances are chosen based on personal connections and evocative qualities. In addition to perfumes, Phāon offers bespoke vases, candle holders and incense holders crafted by renowned artists like ceramist Egidio Milesi and jewellery designers Vasiliki and Margarita Chrisaki. The floral offerings, varying with seasonal availability, include weekly bouquets emphasising local Greek blooms to support the local market and minimise waste. With plans for limited-edition pieces and workshops, Phāon is a haven for those seeking a multisensory journey through the art of fragrance and flowers.

What’s the city like?

Steeped in an astonishing depth of history, Athens – the gem of the region of Attica – is your personal time machine to ancient Greece. Weave through the maze-like streets of Plaka as the sun-dappled Acropolis looms overhead. Stop by the iconic Parthenon, and let’s not forget the lesser-known, yet captivating ancient Agora. Here’s a fun fact: Athens boasts more theatrical stages than any other city in the world – so catch a performance, maybe even a Greek tragedy if you’re feeling a bit dramatic. In a city that’s as much a living museum as a vibrant metropolis, it’s the fusion of past and present that makes Athens unforgettable.
