Eco-lodges in Greece: the best places to stay

Greece’s best eco-lodges

Greece’s small-scale eco-lodges are where local rhythms set the pace. Eco-lodges in Greece draw on old philosophies of balance, with design rooted in the landscape and food shaped by what’s growing nearby. These properties are ambitious about sustainability. Some run their own gardens. Others repurpose local stone and run solar systems to shrink their footprint. Stay here and you’ll meet owners who can tell you the island’s weather by smell, chefs who change the daily offer according to what arrived from the market and designers who treat a simple pergola like a mood. For the in-the-know traveller, these eco-friendly retreats reveal something quieter and more enduring than the postcard fantasy. Here’s where to check in.

Oku Kos

Oku Kos feels like a modern village built for barefoot luxury. Oku Kos reopened in April 2025 as an adult-only retreat where slow living and mindfulness are more than buzzwords. Low-rise cubes gather around courtyards, gardens spill into the paths and the architecture works with the island’s light rather than against it. The design is minimal boho-chic with whitewashed and light, natural woods and handmade accessories woven by local artisans. Suites include private gardens or private pools, rain showers and living areas that open wide to the sea. The food philosophy spotlights farm-to-fork. Chef Mark Vaessen leads seasonal menus that include vegetarian, vegan and fresh fish dishes drawn from Kos’s farmers and the sea.

Acro Suites

Crete has always been elemental – rock, sea, fire, myth. Acro Suites channels that rawness into something architectural. Stark cliffs, sea-expansive views and intimate design details carved with intention. All 49 suites, lofts and villas follow the natural hill’s curve. No one behind you, no one above, rooms built low so the landscape dominates the horizon. The interiors feature raw marble, exposed stone and organic textiles. Even the Cave Suites are literal reveries in stone sculpted by Cretan artisans. Dining is anchored by Cremnos, where chef Yannis Rokanas works with regional farms and coastline produce to serve dishes that reveal the island’s agriculture with confidence. The Bath House draws on hammam form with curved stone, vaulting, pools, a sauna, treatment rooms and terraces to watch the sun fall behind waves.

The Rooster

The Rooster began as the personal project of Athanasia Comninos and that origin shows in every detail. The owner’s background in interior editorial informs a pared-back Cycladic palette and an obsessive eye for objects sourced from Greek artisans. Spread across 30 acres, its villas rise from the land like they’ve always belonged there, with rough stone walls wrapped in wild gardens of thyme and oregano. Interiors are restrained but textured, featuring polished concrete, woven reed chairs and outdoor showers that smell of salt and sun. The Rooster operates a small-farm approach to food. The produce from the property’s garden feeds the kitchen and menus change with what’s ripe. For some serenity, head to the House of Healing. This wellness centre faces the sea and hosts yoga, meditation and sound therapy.

Ekies All Senses Resort

Ekies All Senses Resort is where barefoot luxury and environmental integrity intersect. Owner Alexandra Efstathiadou reimagined a childhood summer dream here. Restoring ruins into a resort that blends with olive trees, pines, rocky coves, sea caves and forest. Rooms are built with a less-is-more aesthetic inspired by nearby monasteries. They used natural materials like wood, marble and rough concrete ceilings. Inside you’ll find an earthy palette of olive green, blues, whites and burnt sienna. Floors include handmade ceramics and mosaics referencing local Orthodox churches and traditional homes. The organic farm feeds the kitchen. Herbs, edible flowers and vegetables move straight from soil to plate. At night, the bar mixes cocktails with garden-grown botanicals.

Native Eco Villas

High on the rim of the caldera in Imerovigli, Santorini, Native Eco Villas are the creation of Georgios & Sophie, a duo with a love for Cycladic form and Scandinavian minimalism. Three private villas (Eco Canava, Eco Residence, Eco Xenia) retain the bones of the old cave houses but were rebuilt with ecological methods, using reclaimed stone and wood. Interiors emphasise minimalism with texture. Classic whitewashed walls, linen curtains, woven baskets and terraces with jacuzzis that frame one of the most iconic views in the Mediterranean. A special touch that we like is the breakfast baskets. These are filled with local produce, the kind you’d pick up from a neighbour’s garden or a bakery in Fira.
