The Mediterranean • Stay • Pa.te.os in Melides, Portugal
Pa.te.os by famed Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus is a stunning collection of four architecturally designed houses located near the Portuguese village of Melides. Created as works of art in the vastness of the land, Pa.te.os explores the concept of the patio, where nature is embedded within the inhabitable space of a house. The houses are designed to blur the line between interior and exterior, offering a level of comfort and privacy that can only be found in one’s own home.
The rooms in Pa.te.os are constructed with bare concrete, European oak and stone, allowing guests to interact with the landscape and offering expansive views over the ocean. Each house offers different features, such as outdoor showers and Aesop amenities and a communal swimming pool that reflects the shape of the houses and respect for the topography. The interiors are designed to be distraction-free, with only small features like the mobiles in every room and the art, architecture, design, cooking and travel books that are offered.

In terms of the stay experience, there is no restaurant as such, but a small menu with light meals and an on-demand private chef service are available. Guests can also select a bottle of wine from the carefully curated wine list. There is an outdoor training platform, Blue Sky, and a massage/yoga service on-demand. Pa.te.os is perfect for those who want to disconnect from the day-to-day busyness of life and immerse themselves in the beauty of the natural landscape of Alentejo.
Discover the hidden gem of Portugal’s Alentejo, a region of stunning beaches, medieval fortresses, and a rugged interior dotted with picturesque sugar-cube houses. While the nearby Algarve attracts hordes of tourists, the Alentejo remains tranquil, with many deserted beaches to explore. Savour the region’s delicious, underrated wines while enjoying panoramic countryside views, with majestic cork oaks and olive groves teeming with wildlife. Explore ancient Iberian settlements and don’t miss the chance to dine on fresh local cuisine, including black pig and wild mushroom specialities.
