Barcelona, Spain

The best boutique and luxury hotels in Barcelona, ranked

Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain, has a hotel scene that increasingly feels part of the city rather than apart from it. Old palaces, guild houses and Modernista homes have become places to sleep, eat, drink and linger alongside locals, with the strongest properties taking their identity from the building, street and neighbourhood.

Hotel Neri

Barcelona, Spain

Hotel Neri is a small, deeply atmospheric way to stay inside Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter rather than simply visit it. Its 22 rooms and suites occupy two historic buildings beside Plaça de Sant Felip Neri, including a medieval palace dating to the 12th century. The restoration uncovered an old courtyard and important original sgraffito work, while Virginia Figueras and Franco Corada introduced warm, contemporary interiors without flattening the building’s history. Neri is also Barcelona’s only Relais & Châteaux hotel. Downstairs, restaurant ‘a’ focuses on updated classics and local produce; upstairs, the planted Roba Estesa rooftop offers a quiet retreat above the old city. Some rooms look directly onto the square.

Hotel Casa Sagnier

Barcelona, Spain

Hotel Casa Sagnier gives travellers a rare chance to stay in the home and studio of one of Barcelona’s most prolific Modernista architects. Enric Sagnier designed the Rambla de Catalunya building for himself and his family in 1892, combining residential life with his architectural practice. Restored in 2021, it now holds 51 rooms and suites, with interiors by Turull-Sørensen Arquitectos that treat the building as an evolving home rather than a period reconstruction. Family photographs, architectural references and art installations connect the hotel back to Sagnier’s life and work. At street level, Cafè de l’Arquitecte works as restaurant, café, bar and cocktail spot, while the hotel also has a rooftop terrace, gym and sauna.

Cotton House Hotel

Barcelona, Spain

Cotton House Hotel makes Barcelona’s textile history the basis for a polished five-star stay rather than a decorative theme. The 83-room hotel occupies the former headquarters of the city’s Cotton Producers’ Guild, a 19th-century neoclassical building in Eixample. Lázaro Rosa-Violán’s interiors retain the grand marble staircase, ceiling frescoes, wood panelling and extraordinary suspended spiral staircase from the 1950s, then layer in contemporary furniture and references to cotton. The original library remains one of its best rooms, while Batuar restaurant and bar spills onto a large planted terrace. Upstairs, there is a guest-only rooftop pool. The hotel even keeps the textile connection alive through an on-site bespoke tailoring service.

El Palauet Living

Barcelona, Spain

El Palauet Living is less a conventional hotel than a private Modernista residence with service on call. The six suites occupy Casa Bonaventura Ferrer, a 1906 mansion at the upper end of Passeig de Gràcia designed by architect Pere Falqués i Urpí. Each measures 150 square metres, with two bedrooms, a kitchen, living spaces and access to a 24-hour suite ambassador. Much of the pleasure is in the building itself: 57 catalogued ceilings, stained glass, wrought iron, original lamps and a period lift survive alongside contemporary additions. A rooftop and spa complete the setup, while La Pedrera and the shops and restaurants of Eixample and Gràcia are within easy walking distance.

Ohla Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain

Ohla Barcelona is the city-centre choice for travellers who want serious food, bold design and a rooftop pool within walking distance of the Gothic Quarter. The 74-room hotel occupies the former Casa Vilardell, once one of Barcelona’s early luxury department stores, on Via Laietana between the cathedral and Palau de la Música. Architect Daniel Isern transformed the building, while artist Frederic Amat gave its façade its defining feature: a thousand sculptural eyes looking out over the street. Inside, the mood is restrained and contemporary. Michelin-starred Caelis, led by chef Romain Fornell, is the main dining draw, while the rooftop adds a glass-sided pool and wide views across old Barcelona.
