The Mediterranean • Stay • Parkhotel Mondschein in Bolzano, Italy
Stepping into Parkhotel Mondschein is like embracing a slice of Bolzano’s rich tapestry; a historic marvel transformed for the contemporary traveller. Occupying a prominent stance in Bolzano’s vibrant core, this landmark property, dating back to 1330, captures the spirit of the city — blending its storied past with today’s pulsating rhythm. The 2022 renovation unearthed the luminous aura of the early sixties, echoing scenes straight from Italian cinema’s golden epoch. As host Moritz Dissertori puts it, it’s a space curated for guests to find solace, underpinned by impeccable quality and design. For those in seach of company, the ground floor Luna Bar is a local hotspot and floods with guests and locals come aperitivo-time.
Your entrance into one of the 76 rooms at Parkhotel Mondschein is a dance between nostalgia and contemporary elegance. Each space, whether a regular room or a suite, is a visual feast conceptualised by the Merano-based Studio Biquadra, led by Christiana Biasi-von Berg. While less is definitely more here, the pared-back decor is by no means austere. A harmonious colour palette, paired with timeless furnishings, sets the scene. We stayed in one of the junior suites facing the leafy park and the surrounding Dolomite mountains. While history lingers underfoot with refurbished herringbone parquet, revamped bathrooms boasting sleek white tiles and vintage silver touches infuse a modern finesse.

Dive into rejuvenation at Arise – Mondschein’s in-house sanctuary set within its ancient walls, offering a medley of yoga and Tai Chi. If fitness beckons, the well-equipped gym awaits. Post workout, let the in-house sauna’s warmth envelop you. But the pleasures don’t stop indoors. An adjacent park, a cocoon from the city’s hum, offers summer respites, and the outdoor bar promises a refreshing cocktail or classic Italian granita. Culinary journeys commence at Luna Bar, where a la carte breakfasts redefine mornings and hearty dishes are quietly brought to your table. We especially loved the Eggs Benedict. For the aesthetically inclined, the hotel’s corridors and chambers are graced by the imaginative works of artists Irene Fernandez Areas and Karla Hiraldo Voleau.
South Tyrol (or Alto Adige in Italian) stands as Italy’s northernmost province, a captivating blend where Alpine landscapes meet Mediterranean flair. Bolzano, its capital, bridges cultures, with its Austrian past and Italian present echoing in its architecture, food and festivals. Amidst vineyard-clad valleys, Merano offers thermal baths, while Bressanone impresses with its medieval charm. The majestic Dolomites dominate the skyline, drawing trekkers and skiers alike. But it’s not just about sights; it’s a sensorial journey. One day you’re biting into knödel, the next, savouring a plate of tagliatelle. Factor in the region’s trilingual prowess – German, Italian and Ladin – and you find South Tyrol isn’t just a place; it’s an experience.
