La Torretta Lodge, converted from a 19th-century fishermen’s residence, is now run by the Sorlini family, whose passion for local craftsmanship can be seen throughout the entire hotel. Hand-painted tiles frame the bathrooms, handcrafted wooden furniture and soft linens – all elements that feel like home with a curated touch. Though compact, the rooms feel airy thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows and the in-room breakfast basket – overflowing with focaccia, local honey and fresh fruit – is a nice touch. We love the rooftop terrace, where olive trees and loungers gaze over pastel facades and Ligurian waters. Evenings are reserved for Ligurian wine tastings led by resident sommelier Marco, who pairs vintages with trofie al pesto passed down through generations.

Just south of Cinque Terre, in the historic town of Portovenere, Grand Hotel Portovenere, housed in a former 17th-century Franciscan convent, has mastered the art of modern luxury wrapped in layers of history. Opened in 1902 by the Del Piero family, its palazzo façade overlooks a private marina. Inside, frescoed ceilings and terrazzo floors grant a sense of old-world refinement. Rooms offer sweeping views over the Gulf of Poets – the same waters that inspired Lord Byron and Percy Shelley. The in-house Palmaria Restaurant focuses on regional authenticity, where executive chef Lucia Rossi sources thyme-infused olive oil from local groves and bottarga from La Spezia’s fish markets. Don’t miss the ground-floor spa, set in former wine cellars, offering seaweed wraps and Ligurian clay facials.

Casa di Andrea in Monterosso al Mare began life as a family home before it was transformed into an intimate countryside guesthouse. This small guesthouse features five rooms that overlook the gardens. Framed by lemon trees, olive trees, fruit trees and flowers, the charming scene showcases the rooftops of the village of Monterosso. Every morning, you will enjoy a delicious breakfast under the shade of a sail or, if the weather doesn’t permit, in the bright and airy dining room, prepared with ingredients grown by the owners in their own little garden. This is a place for those who want Cinque Terre at its most personal – a peaceful base that feels like home.

The Poet Hotel in La Spezia is your urban, design-forward escape – ideal if you want a bit more space, access to art galleries and restaurants and easy day trips into the national park. Housed in a former railway office just a five-minute walk from the station, this boutique hotel was opened by Aurelio Boraschi and designed with the help of Fiorini D’Amico Architetti studio. The ground floor is one fluid space – lobby, café-style bar, long social table with power outlets, lounge nooks and a meeting room – all finished in natural oak, Carrara marble, waxed iron and colourful vintage accents that punctuate the aesthetic. Upstairs, the 57 rooms are practical and personality-filled – parquet-like floors, rainfall showers, open hanging rails, smart lighting and mid-century-inspired furniture. If you prefer boutique polish with city energy, this is your place.

Built into the cliffs just above Monterosso al Mare’s old town, Hotel Porto Roca has one of the best viewpoints in the entire region. Founded in 1958 by the Roca family, this hotel is all about classic Italian Riviera glamour, complete with tiled terraces, hand-painted headboards and a saltwater infinity pool that appears to float above the sea. The philosophy here is unapologetically relaxed – days are made for lounging on sunbeds by the pool or descending the private staircase to Porto Roca Beach Club. Make some time in your schedule to enjoy a meal at the on-site restaurant, where head chef Stefano serves a tasting menu that features sea bass crudo with Ligurian lemon oil – all enjoyed under pergolas draped in wisteria.
