The 5 best boutique and luxury hotels in Nantes, France

Nantes’s most chic boutique hotels

In the Pays de la Loire region of France, the city of Nantes doesn’t play by the usual rules. As the historic capital of Brittany, it has a poet’s soul and an engineer’s mind – where a giant mechanical elephant roams the streets and art flourishes in the most unexpected corners. A place with this much character calls for an equally original backdrop for your stay. Forget the anonymous hallways and predictable decor. The real appeal of staying in Nantes lies in hotels with character and history. This guide highlights places where the stay itself becomes part of the journey.

Château de Maubreuil

A few minutes outside Nantes, Château de Maubreuil brings a grand history right into your stay. Originally an estate from the 14th century, it evolved through noble hands, a Revolutionary ruin, a sanatorium and finally a beautifully restored five-star château resort that opened in December 2019. What struck us most is how traces of its past remain – the private chapel is now the wine cellar, the dovecote houses a suite named A Thousand and One Nights and the restaurant, La Table du Marquis, nods to its automotive-pioneering owner, Marquis de Dion. With just 14 suites, three flats, a Cinq Mondes spa and manicured gardens, the atmosphere feels intimate, history-rich and luxuriously calm.

L’abbaye De Villeneuve

L’abbaye De Villeneuve has an understated strength, standing firm through centuries of change. This 13th-century Cistercian abbey was founded under Duchess Constance’s patronage in 1201 and later restored in 1977 after the Revolution and war left it in disarray. Today, it’s a 4-star retreat set in a 20-hectare park, offering just 17 rooms and suites. Plus an acclaimed Michelin-starred restaurant, Le 1201, a brasserie, a tasting cellar and bar and a summer-season heated outdoor pool and lush gardens. Walking through its halls with ancient stone walls, you can feel the layers of history paired with thoughtful modernity.

Sozo Hotel

Right in Nantes’s city heart, Sozo Hotel is housed in a former 19th-century chapel – immediately grabbing your attention as soon as you see those soaring vaults and stained-glass windows. Once inside, you sense a deliberate contrast – minimalist décor, designer furnishings, soft neutrals balanced with bold pops of colour and original chapel architecture peeking through. Just 23 individually designed rooms offer a sense of privacy and creativity. Below, a spa with a hammam, sauna and sensory shower brings relaxation under soaring arches. The location couldn’t be more ideal – opposite Jardin des Plantes, a short stroll from the mediaeval Bouffay quarter and Passage Pommeraye.

La Pérouse Hotel

La Pérouse Hotel stands out with its striking architecture that plays with angles and forms rather than straightforward lines. Built in the early 1990s by Barto + Barto, the hotel’s façade features carefully offset windows and solid tuffeau stone, giving it a strong, confident presence on Nantes’s cityscape. Those details echo the subtle inclines seen in older nearby buildings, built on shifting ground. Inside, 46 soundproof rooms echo maritime themes with subtle nods to ship cabins and even Jules Verne’s legacy hidden in design details. There is unfortunately no on-site restaurant, but the location puts you within walking distance of some of the best dining establishments and attractions, like Allée Duquesne, Place des Petits-Murs and Rue Armand-Brossard.
