Castiglioncello del Trinore, Italy

Monteverdi Tuscany

What’s the hotel in a nutshell?

Ever wondered what it would be like to have a Tuscan mountain village all to yourself and wake up with the Tuscan landscape spread out beneath you? Monteverdi Tuscany is a boutique hotel exquisitely restored from the medieval hamlet of Castiglioncello del Trinoro in the heart of Tuscany. Founded by American Michael Cioffi and designed by Ilaria Miani, this unique property avoids turning historic charm into a tourist cliché. Over a 14-year meticulous restoration, it now offers 29 rooms, three private villas, a culinary academy, and a spa. The hotel is a blend of old-world charm and contemporary design, set against the stunning backdrop of the Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering a luxurious escape rooted in local culture and history.

What are the rooms like?

We initially found the varied interiors at Monteverdi intriguing, if not a bit bewildering, with their diverse colors and styles. However, upon entering our room, it all made sense – you have to think of each room not as part of a hotel, but as part of a village (as Monteverdi is). Each room at Monteverdi is a masterpiece, individually designed with a blend of rustic charm and modern luxury. Interior designer Ilaria Miani used reclaimed materials, including salvaged wood and stone, to create a unique aesthetic. Rooms feature bold colour palettes and bespoke furnishings crafted by local artisans. Highlights include the La Pieve suite, with its Giotto-inspired canopy bed, and bathrooms designed to offer views of the surrounding nature. Every detail, from terracotta pendant lighting to ceramic artwork, reflects the Tuscan terroir, ensuring that each stay is a unique and immersive experience.
