The Mediterranean • Stay • The 5 best boutique and luxury hotels in Thessaloniki, Greece
Thessaloniki has always done things its own way. Located in the Macedonia region of Greece, Thessaloniki feels creative, lived-in and layered – with Roman ruins tucked between apartment blocks, late-night conversations spilling out of ouzeris and a waterfront that locals actually use. The hotels here reflect that same unpolished charm and confidence. Some sit behind old façades with ornate balconies, others are slick, urban spaces with rooftop bars and city views. But they all share a sense of place – anchored in design, shaped by story and quietly dialled in to what makes this city tick. If you’re planning a visit, this is where you’ll find the best boutique hotels in Thessaloniki.

On Residence sits right on the seafront and brings one of Thessaloniki’s most iconic historic buildings back to life. Originally built in 1926 by architect Jacques Mosse, this Belle Époque mansion once housed the famous Olympos Naoussa restaurant – a gathering spot for locals, artists and European dignitaries until the 1990s. Now, it’s been reimagined as a boutique stay, where old-world glamour meets contemporary polish. Rooms are fitted with oak floors, brass details, velvet headboards and high-end comforts like Marshall speakers, Nespresso machines and walk-in showers. Downstairs, the revived Olympos Naoussa serves Mediterranean dishes with a fine-dining approach, staying true to its roots as one of the city’s most legendary eateries. There’s also a rooftop bar for late-night views and a small gym for early morning resets.

Daios Luxury Living is the kind of place you check into when you want to be near everything but don’t want the noise of it all. Right on Nikis Avenue – just a few minutes from the White Tower – it offers panoramic views over the Thermaic Gulf and every room feels purpose-built to make the most of it. The 49 rooms and suites are modern and airy, with floor-to-ceiling windows, light wooden floors, glass-walled bathrooms and muted tones that don’t compete with the view. You won’t find a spa or pool here, but the hotel focuses on quality over extras. It has a Mediterranean bar-restaurant onsite – popular for sunset cocktails and casual dining with sea views – and a terrace that doubles as a quiet hangout. The best part? You can sip your morning coffee while watching ferries drift past your window.

Monasty opened in summer 2022 in the city centre as Marriott’s Autograph Collection’s first Thessaloniki property. D2C2 Architects and Delblu Architetti created the structure, while Not A Number Architects handled interiors. The result? Vaulted arched doorways, neutral tones, embossed fonts, custom lighting and local art that echo Byzantine heritage through a contemporary lens. The rooms are equipped with the latest amenities and some of them even come with an outdoor jacuzzi, perfect for a romantic evening under the stars. On the top floor, the Ennea rooftop bar offers 360° city and sea views – great for a sundowner. Dining downstairs is Botargo, named after a Byzantine delicacy, serving Mediterranean food in a refined space. The hotel also has a fully equipped gym illuminated by natural light, perfect for a morning workout before exploring the city.

The Excelsior Hotel, housed in a grand 1920s neoclassical building, has been sensitively updated – think polished marble staircases and dramatic red-leaf chandeliers meeting sleek, modern design. With just 36 rooms spread across five floors, this stay keeps things personal but polished – pillow-top beds, well-stocked minibars and private balconies come standard, along with free Wi-Fi to keep you connected. You’re right in the cultural heart of Thessaloniki, with wooden floors underfoot and views of buzzy Tsimiski Street just outside. On the food front, you’re sorted from morning to night. Charlie D serves up everything from breakfast classics to laid-back dinners on the mezzanine, while Clochard – a local institution since the 1970s – takes things up a notch with its refined take on Mediterranean dining.

Elisabeth Boutique Hotel sits between the buzz of Ladadika and the upper town, in a spot that feels hidden away but still central. It’s housed in a restored heritage building, beneath the bell tower of the Church of the Franks. The design is clean and contemporary, with warm lighting, plush textures and a calm, neutral palette running throughout the 34 rooms. You’ll find a few extra perks that go beyond the usual city hotel setup – a small wellness area with a sauna, jacuzzi and massage treatments, a compact gym and even a cosy library nook if you’re after a bit of quiet. The dining options cover all bases, from a full-service restaurant to a laid-back coffee shop, bar and snack spot. Breakfast is a generous buffet and when you’re ready to explore, Aristotelous Square is a 10-minute stroll away, with shops, bars and nightlife all within easy reach.
